ASSB
Short history of ASSB

About us... or how it all started

If ASSB had its own ID, in the "place of birth" it would be filled with "Łódź".

Association was founded on 5th December 1999, during the First Seminar of Biotechnology Students in Poland. Students gathered there wrote down their ideas for the all-Polish organization, making it the first, now historical, statute of the Association.

In this document we can read for example:

"The main aim of ASSB is to integrate Biotechnology Students and others majors connected somehow with this field of knowledge from different universities from Poland (such as non-profiled Universities, Technical Universities, Medical Universities, Agriculture Universities and Economy Academies) . This aim will be realised by cooperation between Science Clubs of Biotechnology Students united in Association, extending their own knowledge in a field of Biotechnology and popularise this knowledge in the community.

The aims of Academic Society of Biotechnology Students (ASSB) will be achieved by:

  • organisation of meetings of Groups of Biotechnology Students united in ASSB called "Seminars of Young Biotechnology Students in Poland" every year
  • organisation of intercollegiate students exchanges from different universities"

During the last couple of years, since ASSB was established, we became firmly convinced of the strong need for such association.

Next seminars, after the first one in Łodź, took places in: Poznań (2000), Gdańsk (2001), Lublin (2002), again in Łódź (2003), Olsztyn (2003), Warszawa (2004) and Wrocław (2005). All of them were very popular among biotechnology students from various cities in Poland (approximately about 120 participants every year). Each of the following seminars had similar, major aims:

  • integration of biotechnology students and others interested in this field of knowledge
  • give the opportunity to present students scientific projects
  • have a chance to listen to lectures of invited scientists
  • cooperating between various universities
  • exchange of experiences between Science Clubs of Biotechnology Students (reports of activity)
  • good fun, new friends and getting to know new places in Poland
In the history of ASSB we managed to organise students exchange (one week classes) between Jagiellonian University and Technical University of Łódź.

In 2003 , we got in touch with YEBN, organisation uniting biotechnology students from Europe.

January 2006, was a crucial time for ASSB. Organisation very popular those days was gaining wider interest not only among students, but also teachers responsible for Biotechnology at certain universities. Association came to an idea to make itself a real corporation. To do that, on the 3rd January 2006, as an initiative of Science Club of Biotechnology Students from "KNBiotech" from SGGW, Warszawa in Pogorzel Warszawska there was a meeting of chairmen and members of all Groups of Biotechnology Students in Poland.

Pogorzel Warszawska will always stay in history as a place where the new foundations of ASSB were laid. At this meeting new statute was signed, as well as new rules which enabled then to register ASSB in the National Court Registry. Exactly two months after the meeting in Pogorzel Warszawska we received a letter from the National Court Registry giving us the right to be a formally registered organisation. (No. 0000251796)
